“TRY NET PROJECT”
OBJECTIVE : To consider why the recommendation: “Eat Fish Twice Weekly to Protect Your Heart” (American Heart Association) leaves millions of Americans seriously deficient in the essential Omega-3 Fatty Acids, EPA and DHA, due to unquestioning selection of fishery products depleted in essential fatty acids by handling and processing, or destructive cooking methods, or counterproductive dietary habits and lifestyles.
Why emphasize fish lipid (fish oil) research? Because proper use of fisheries resources will improve health and extend lives of millions. Most persons, young and old, are deficient in long chain, essential fatty acids, and in the protective foods required to assure long term health benefits.
TRY NET SEAFOOD DINNERS SUPPLEMENTED WITH FISH OIL
Experimental Design - To investigate the use of 6 grams of fish oil per week, versus 21 grams per week recommended by manufacturers. With each of two seafood meals/week, 3 grams of fish oil is to be swallowed, or mixed with the seafood dinner, such meals to consist of various fresh, frozen, or canned wild ocean fish, or shellfish (all likely to contain the naturally occurring phospholipids required to increase bioavailability of the fish Oil.
Twenty healthy subjects, various ages, participated in a three month “two seafood meals/week trial, each meal supplemented with 3 grams of fish oil”. Participants were instructed that fish fats must be protected from oxidation by eating varied fresh, colorful, vegetables; berries; fruits; nuts;, whole grain cereals; and virgin olive oil. Careful cooking methods are essential.
RESULTS OMEGA-3 INDEX & FATTY ACID TRENDS
Each participant submitted a blood spot sample to the laboratory and received an initial status report- HS-Omega-3-Index, (based on regression equation EPA+DHA), fatty acid profiles that included Alpha-linolenic acid, EPA, DHA, Linoleic Acid, Arachidonic Acid, Omega-6:Omega-3, AA:EPA, Trans Fatty Acid, Sat. Fatty Acids, Mono-unsaturated fatty acids. Three months later, the participants submitted a blood spot sample. Omega-3 Index changes are the basic “achievement indicator”. In the data sheets we have cited “Favorable and Unfavorable Trends” that may be influenced by careful diets. SEE : Attached “Data Sheets Nos. 1, 2 and 3 |
